this is the yakel kastom (village) of the vanuatu island of tanna. kastom villagers refuse any modern methods of living, choosing instead to keep with the traditional ways; they have no electricity, fetch water from the nearby river, and grow everything they eat. women wear skirts made of coconut fiber and men wear only a namba.

in the katsom, certain men are tasked with the responsibility of keeping the other villagers in good spirits, taking on the title, “happy man.” according to the 2006 happy planet index, which analyzes data on reported happiness, life expectancy and ecological footprint, vanuatu is the happiest, most ecologically efficient nation in the world.

You can’t argue with these images. Climate change is a very real fact and is process that has been severely exacerbated and hastened by modern human activities.

The Earth is a living entity and is thus subject to such changes (and our human fossil record clearly reflect some of the more recent occurences of climate change such as the Younger Dryas event). The planet will hopefully keep on trucking as she always has, eventually finding some equilibrium after massive points of changes just like she always has. But who knows what these changes will mean for us 50-100-1,000 years down the line.

the blomstrandbreen glacier, located in the norwegian svalbard archipelago in the arctic ocean, has retreated nearly two kilometers since 1928, the year the black and white photos were taken. the rate of glacial retreat has accelerated to 35 metres per year since 1960, and even faster in the last decade. black and white photos courtesy the norwegian polar institute, color photos christian aslund for greenpeace

Heehee… I have the worst present-giver poker face, which is why I can’t be a secret Secret Santa.

Pretty much my face.

Stromatolites are layered accumulations of photosynthetic bacteria that formed in sediments along ancient ocean floors. These single-celled organisms congregated in mats, expelling vast amounts of oxygen waste into the environment, thus paving the way for other life to thrive… eventually resulting in you. This stromatolite is your 4.5 billion - 543 million year old ancestor.

The circle of life.
